Pie-in-the-Sky Priority = FAIL
Time for my quarterly PE vent.
My wife flew JFK-AMS last night (DL80) and, rather than be recognized as PE on the empty flight, she said it was the rudest FC she'd ever encountered.
So far this year my wife is 0/2 on TATL op-ups on DL metal, no surprise there, and 3 for 6 on domestic upgrades this year.
I'm 0/6 on TATL op-ups on DL metal this year, but 2/2 on domestic. My total TATL segments on SkyTeam this year = 13 and the one segment in First was a 216 KLM upgrade special offered at check-in.
After about a year as PE, we are seeing the lounge access on international flights as the only real tangible benefit aside from the approx. 62% chance of upgrade on domestic flights. Yes, there is the 40,000 mile bonus that we selected as our choice benefit, but we've also noticed that award ticket prices have jumped up by about the same.
I know, I'm a whiner, and I should be grateful that there is a carrier that serves my route and scheduling needs at LUT prices that I can barely afford.

Perhaps you should join AFKL Flying Blue instead, unless you are more interested into the upgrades into domestic "in the front of the airplane" class on DL which is no longer a benefit.
There are so few FB Platinums left today that your chances of getting TATL op ups on KL metal are now greatly increased. Also, there is no problem in finding premium award travel easily online with the booking tool, often offered at discounts of 50% off of the standard mileage rates on selected flights. For example, now AMS-MEX RT in biz class for 50k miles.

So DL "failed" by not providing to you or your wife what was never advertised as a beneift in any way whatsoever? You wanted service which you didn't pay for, which they never promised, but it was still a "fail"? Pay for L-U-T, sit in back. It is where you belong.

Being from home of KLM you should be looking at FB as your FF for better TATL upgrades.
When it was NW/KL alliance I, as a NW/WP Plat was given op-ups TATL many times when coach was full. KL/AF does not extended the same generosity towards DL SM PM.
DL does not upgrade TPAC TATL or HI flights unless the Y cabin is full.
