I traveled six segments last week....there seems to be two levels of GATE LICE.
1) The usual medallions who anchor themselves to the walls or seats closest to the gate, battling it out to see who gets to be the first medallion on board! 2) the confused non-medallion/non FF-type who are totally clueless to begin with, aimlessly standing around, blocking access to the boarding gate. However, it seems the pushy types are definitely Medallions who insist THEY get "their" rightful boarding access. This past week, all six flights....the boarding process was a joke, with GA's scarcely observing boarding passes to see if it matched the zone called out. GA announces infants/stroller/wheelchair folks...and suddenly you get DMs, PMs and GMs' pushing ahead of FC passengers...people need to get a grip! |

This sounds familiar (honestly). I recall being subjected to this once on a LCC in Europe. Perhaps EasyJet? You were penalized for bringing too much to the gate.

I've seen it, though usually without the "looking around to see if he'd get caught" part.
Much more common is the pax seated near the back who put their bags over the first few rows of Y. When I see that, if a pax who is actually seated there shows up looking for space, I'll tell him which bags can be taken down because the pax at the rear has no chance of objecting. I have to hand it to the flight attendant for the way she handled the situation. Without blinking, she lifted the bag out of the bin, tagged it and sent it down the gate to be loaded without giving Pa Kettle the option of a dramatic scene. The young man then put his rollaboard in the overhead bin so he could get off the plane quickly. She handed him the gate check tag right before landing and there wasn't much he could do. Brava to the flight attendant. Perhaps it was not kosher for some, but I believe she accomodated a first class passenger in the way the service was meant to work. |

The only flight that I took on Delta so far this year, a Kettle put his bag into the first class overhead and walked back into economy. A very harried young man, who happened to be sitting in the seat next to mine in first class, boarded and could not find overhead space. The young man, who had been running to get this connection home as his wife was about to deliver their first child, asked the flight attendant for assistance. The guy behind me pointed out that the bag belonged to Pa Kettle in the back.

This reminds me of one of my last trips on US through PHX! Where was this plane going? Perhaps a WN destination?

ok, I m sorry - but - as long as you board thru the carpet - you WILL get overhead space on the plane - why line up half an hour before.
No, you will not. Especially when 80% of the plane is SkyDiluted. |

If I'm in an emergency exit row or in one of the first Y rows and also porting bags, sure, I'll be one of the gate nits. Otherwise, I hate boarding first, although IMO deplaning is much worse.

pay for it?

Stop being a gate louse. If you want overhead space, pay for it.
This would just be for my edification. Even if I could pay for it, gate lousery is free, and I am cheap. |
