Drubovnik has reached its limit

https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/...ships-limited/

In a bid to stem the flow of tourists swarming its walled Old Town, the Croatian city is limiting the number of ships to two a day in 2019, carrying a maximum of 5,000 passengers each, according to The Dubrovnik Times.

The city’s starring role as “King’s Landing” in Game of Thrones has been blamed for the excessive influx of visitors in recent years. During summer months, the narrow limestone lanes of the historic centre are jammed with fans photographing locations from the hit HBO drama.

In recent years, 10 or more ships unloading 10,000 visitors a day have docked in Dubrovnik, which receives double that amount of tourists overall on busy days.

Really can’t blame them. We’ve been there three times in the last six years and have really noticed the increase and crowding from our first visit six years ago to our latest last year. Wonderful place though and even with the growing interest and more people we have enjoyed our visits. We noticed the same thing in beautiful Kotor as more and bigger ships are stopping there. Haven’t heard of them cutting back or restricting visits there yet but wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t already have or are thinking of restrictions.

What stood out in the article was this.

Unesco has warned that it might revoke Dubrovnik’s World Heritage listing if the overcrowding continues and has recommended that a maximum of 8,000 tourists be allowed in the Old Town at once.
Cruisers will be on the losing end if limits are placed on access to historic sites that are also easily accessed by non-cruisers. Local tourism authorities much prefer land-based travellers because they leave more of their money in the community.

You can thank Game of Thrones for most of the tourist up-tick.
Every bloody souvenir shop in every port we visited last month was hawking crappy GOT items. Same thing happened years ago with Bellagio (Italy), once Las Vegas and Andrea Bocelli got done exposed it.
