We cruised the greek islands in I think the end of September or beginning of October one year. It was the last week of the season (which I highly recommend to avoid the crowds and enjoy the trip) but most places were getting ready to close for the season. Many places, shops, restaurants, etc had already closed. I would picture even more off season to be even worse.

We cruised from Athens in late March one year (5 days on Olympia?), to Mykonos, Kusadasi, Patmos and Rhodes. Mykonos, being a summer tourist area, was pretty closed up. The rest were wonderful - since there is much more to do than the beach. Weather was mostly great, not too hot, esp in Athens, which can get unbearable in the summer. We sailed Italy/France in August a few years ago - it was too hot for sightseeing but would have been great beach weather. We sailed Spain/Portugal/Morocco/Canaries last March - ideal weather for touring - mid 70's. Cruising the Med for 14 days next month over the holidays. Not expecting anything close to warm weather, but should be good for touring Egypt, etc. In the end I think it depends on whether you want a "touring/walking" vacation or a "relax on the beach" trip.

Wish I could help with recommendations - I don't know who is doing shorter Med cruises - there seem to be a lot of long ones in the "off-season".

Costa Cruises does offer some southern Med. itineraries in January, 2010 but most sail south to Egypt & Israel from Civitavecchie/Rome and are 12 days, not the short 5 day type you seek. A Greek line, Royal Olympic, had nothing for 2010 but showed nothing for 2009 on their website for short winter itineraries around the Greek Islands.
