Reducing credit card limit

Guys - in general, should I reduce the credit limit card issuers provide me given to maximize the number of credit cards I can apply? Most times I get 17k but then few months later, when I apply for a new card, they say too much credit out. I usually don't need more than 5k and pay off my balances in full

Thanks

short answer: No.

Higher limits beget higher limits. Do you have multiple cards with any of the issuers known to combine limits? That is one way to crowbar your limits up.
