advice on closing card
I occasionally add a card for its reward and other benefits. I now have some cards I don't use. Under what conditions should I close an account? Or, can you refer me to the best place for advice on this? thanks in advance,

Check the terms of any current promotions for new cards you want to cancel.
It will give you the idea whether you should close the card or not.

Thanks, some do, some don't.
In one case, my wife has the top version of the chase sapphire, and I have my own card on her account. But I also have the second-to-top chase sapphire card independently -- that one is just charging me, I think $95, and I'm not using it -- I think I got it just for the sign up bonus, and don't really need any of its features.
Another case is an old capitalone I don't use, but it doesn't have fees.

You can downgrade Sapphire Preferred to Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited, See here: Chase Product Change/Card Conversion: Downgrade, Upgrade, Keep or Cancel? 2020
I would not cancel a free card unless the credit limit is preventing you from being approved for a different card from the same issuer.
