Verified by Visa

Is it possible to force a card or transaction to go through verified by visa and get the SMS confirmation code? I currently get the SMS only for one in 10 or so transactions.

I'm trying to add my BoA credit card to Grab and it's not working, it's stopping at the verified by visa screen, and Grab support told me they only accept cards that support 3d secure, which I believe is the same as verified by visa.

Also, many other international merchants requires verified by visa in order to accept the transaction. So is it possible to enable or force the verified transaction for a specific transaction, or turn it on all the time?

I tried calling BoA but gave up after being redirected to 5 different persons within BoA and Visa.

Try a different company’s credit card.

But not a Chase card:

In my experience Citi MasterCards work reliably.

My card has now stopped working with most European online shops. I get a message at the bank of america verified by visa page that they can't proceed now and that I should call. I called once, they asked some questions and said they approved it so I can try again. But next purchase (from another merchant) was stopped by the same message once again.
With my old boa card I sometimes got a sms with a code, but now they have not offered to send this code, only asks me to call in.

Find a new card issuer, preferably one whose implementation of VbV or Securecode allows you to approve transactions in their app.

It sounds like B of A is using a similar VbV implementation to Chase, where if it can't approve the transaction on its own it declines and makes you call in and then try again. Except that trying again sometimes trips the merchant's or processor's fraud protection and gets a decline from their end.

I ran into this with a Nigerian visa on arrival payment. I tried four different cards from four different US banks, all assured me it should clear on their end, but every one failed on Verified by Visa. Apparently, merchants can require particular implementations of Verified by Visa, and decline any "auto-approved" versions like most US banks use (i.e. those that don't require app/SMS verification).

I used a UK-issued card, verified in the app, and it went through on the first try. American banks suck at this stuff.

FYI, Visa's rebranding VbV to "Visa Secure". There are also two separate versions (corresponding to 3D Secure 1.0 and 2.0); I suspect any future implementation by US issuers will be solely 2.0.

Also, per 10.16.2.4 of the Visa rules, it sounds like Visa will do "stand-in" processing for those issuers that don't support it:

An Issuer that participates in Visa Secure must:

...

* Verify the CAVV. If the CAVV is not verified during Authorization by the Issuer or by Visa, the CAVV is assumed to be valid.
* In the US Region: Provide Visa with its CAVV keys for Stand-In-Processing

For a 3-D Secure 1.0 Authentication Request, if an Issuer does not support Visa Secure, Visa will respond to an Authentication Request, on behalf of the Issuer, with an Attempt Response that contains a CAVV.

Effective 12 April 2019 for the Europe Region
Effective 15 August 2019 for the Canada Region, LAC Region, US Region
Effective 18 April 2020 for the AP Region, CEMEA Region

For a 3-D Secure 2.0 Authentication Request, if an Issuer does not support Visa Secure, Visa will respond to an Authentication Request, on behalf of the Issuer, with an Attempt Response that contains a CAVV
That all said, though, if the behavior people are seeing is already due to said "stand-in" processing, I'm not sure it'll be much different with 2.0. Then again, maybe there'll be more encouragement to get it working properly now that the EU is effectively mandating 3D Secure.

I called again today, and after confirming my account I was told visa would now allow the card for any website for 24 hours. So I went ahead and did 3 purchases from different sites that had been failing the last few days.
So I guess the only way for now is to save up purchased and call in once or twice a week and open the card for purchasing from non US sites, as 3D secure is mandatory in Europe and also common in most of Asia.

3D secure is such an annoyance ! I also tried another EU card (before calling bank of america) and I had to open the bank's app to verify the transaction, however it didn't work, no message appeared in the app.. So either what card you have it is not very smooth.

Now it's become impossible to use the Bank of America card on any foreign website without calling in.

Do you think BoA will make a better system soon, so that I can receive a SMS or similar, and not having to call in?

I don't currently have any BofA cards that are FTF free but I did try a test load to Revolut recently using my debit card. It seemed to go through the VbV process on my phone and succeed without any verification required (and the actual load appeared to go through their UK payment processor per my statement). Is it possible the issues you're having are country dependent? Some may be touchier about VbV implementations not needing verification than others.

my chase CSR sometimes get denied, but BoA TR always works on same website (I get the text message to input on the VerifiedByVisa screen, never encountered a VbV denied webpage for BoA TR)

dont know why it doesnt work for OP. last tried it 2 months ago in asia

does OP have the correct texting phone number set up within BOA website? try to remove and readd it back in?

Good to know that verification texts are supposed to work. When I call in then they manually send me a text to confirm.
I'll try to remove and re-add the phone.
I asked twice if I have to call and the agents confirmed both times that for every foreign merchant I'd have to call in.

SAS SK airline website used to work without any verification, but now since a few weeks ago they also require VBV and I get the notification that I have to call in. Even when my card was saved on the SK website.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the new requirements the EU has put in for stronger verification online.

In theory that's only required for EU-issued cards being used at EU merchants. Who knows if merchants are taking that into account, though.

Bank of America Verified by Visa using other SIM

I am using the Alaska Airlines Bank of America Card and keep running to this issue when travelling. I am using a sim in Thailand (Because ATT is crazy expensive compared to True) but when I try and make an online credit card purchase I get halted at the Verified by Visa screen because they only give me the option to send me a text message to my US number rather than email or an app verification.
So then I have to pop out my sim (which means my IP changes and cancels my transaction) put in my ATT sim, pay ATT $10 +the cost of the text message to get the stupid verification message to make a transaction.
I have been on the phone with Bank of America numerous times trying to get some other way to get through the Verified by Visa screen but have had lots of promises for the next time I try but nothing ever changes.
Is there any way of getting around this or getting my email added to the options?

I travel with a google fi phone and before I leave I go on line and change my phone number in my bank profile to that number. Then when I return I change it back. It seems to work although over all my cards I probably have only had one text in three years.

call in and "preapprove" all transactions thru VerifiedByVisa (looks like the approval expires after a few days)
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/31308624-post8.html

similar case for other cards,
eg chase sapphire, call-in to retrieve VbV pin # https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/23207882-post6.html

PAYG AT&T int'l, should be $0.50 to receive a text

all I can suggest is either use an AT&T phone with wifi calling (so you can receive text for free, but you still have to juggle the transaction isssue), use a dualsim phone (still need to pay for receiving AT&T text)

verizon has an app "Verizon My Numbers" that allows any device to receive text message/calls even if phone is off. AT&T has a similar app "AT&T message", but it doesn't work as well (need a supported AT&T phone, turned on in order to forward/sync received messages to app)

RoamingGeek Dec 25, 2019 2:22 am

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a shot for my next trip. I have been looking into Google fi but it only supports 2g in Alaska but still might be useful if I can turn on and off the service at will.

I also really appreciate the thread links too 😁

An update in case anyone else having the same situation where you don't get the option to receive SMS for verification.
I was using a google voice number and then I didn't get the option to receive a SMS, even thought SMS works for other BoA logins etc.
I added my T-Mobile number to BoA and now I get the option to receive SMS verification messages

I'm done with Bank of America - so frustrated over 3DS issues

Multiple times in the past couple of years when a vendor's processor has 3D Secure (3DS) implemented, I've encountered complete show-stopper issues when attempting to book online with my BofA cards. It presents as a "this transaction could not be completed due to your card issuer needing to provide additional info" type error, with a popup that shows the following text:

BANK OF AMERICA VISA
Your purchase requires additional verification We are unable to
complete verification at this time. Please call 1.877_388.6681
for assistance. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I've called the given phone number, the Platinum Honors-specific CSRs, and on multiple occasions have spoken directly with the BofA fraud dept., and no acceptable resolution has ever been provided for the specific transactions at hand. The worst case almost left me stranded while out of country, unable to book my next destination's hotel and train tickets. The most recent came this morning when after 20 mins on the phone with the fraud dept. their only offered resolution was for me to go into a banking center in person and present 2 forms of ID, which for whatever reason only then would "possibly" permit things to progress with the processor.

I've had an account with BofA for 20+ years. The Cash Rewards card for 15 years, and Travel Rewards card I've had for 2 years.

The hacky work-around I figured out (with no help from BofA obviously) was linking the cards to my PayPal account, whereby I am able to make those same transactions immediately via PayPal without issue. The best that I can deduce, maybe incorrectly, is that BofA's / Visa direct interfacing implementation with the 3DS system is utter trash.

So yeah, if I want to rely on having to go through PayPal to make certain hotel or flight bookings, fine, but I don't want to be dependent on a vendor accepting PayPal, nor be concerned with whether the purchase will be appropriately categorized in the rewards system due to first passing through PayPal.

Has anyone else had these types of issues, specifically with BofA or otherwise?

I welcome any experiences as to which companies appear to have their crap together when it comes to 3DS interfacing, I'm hoping to find equivalent replacements for these cards:

Customized Cash Rewards Visa Signature:
5.25% - chosen category, 3.50% - grocery, 1.75% - everything else

Travel Rewards Visa Signature:
2.62 points per dollar

Thanks!

There is a known issue with using US-issued cards on European and Asian websites that deploy 3DS.

Many thanks for the links, I'll dig into them to learn more about this issue.

So probably a majority of my encounters with it fall under the Europe/Asian website categories, I also unfortunately have experienced it on US sites - this most recent incident was on United.com.

I know I mentioned earlier in this thread that my boa visa used to work with vbv (receive text message with PIN) .. but now, it no longer works. Error message, asking me to call in. No text message

Almost every intl online purchase gets blocked if they go through vbv/3d secure. Even united.com vbv gets blocked (from a USA residential IP address)

I tried using my capital one MasterCard, the 3d secure process did work (got text message)

:(

theory that chase/boa uses 3DSecure 2.0, which is not backward compatible with 3Dsecure 1.0.2.
1.0.2 is decomissioned on Oct 2022, so this doesnt explain it. dont recall when was my last successful VbV text message

For me at least, my CSR has traditionally worked fine for online purchases but not my CFU. I'm not fully sure why, actually, but it kinda seems like a setup issue on Chase's end.
