Hilton Gold: Via CSR+Hhonors, or Amex Plat?

Curious (for a colleague) how you would attain Hilton Gold given the two options?

1) Renew his CSR for $450 (signed up for the 100k bonus), and add the $75 HHonors Surpass card.
Net cost: $450 + $75 - $300 (travel) = $225 (Edit Said $175, I did the math wrong, thanks Chantier)
Biggest Pros: Travel insurance, 3% on travel, 12x on Hilton

2) Close CSR (or downgrade to CSP), and switch to Amex Plat
Net cost: $550 - $200 (Airfare) - $200 (Uber) = $150
Biggest Pros: IAP, 5x on airfare, Centurion and Delta Lounges, more valuable signup bonus (MR vs HHonors).
Minor Pro: He got TSAPre from Chase, could give the Amex one to his partner.

Math correction: $450 + $75 - $300 (travel) = $225 (not $175).

If HHonors Gold status really is the most important factor, go with option 2. However, if you don't stay at Hiltons VERY frequently (which you don't if you're interested in getting comped status via a credit card), HHonors Gold is not valuable enough to factor into the CSR vs. Amex Plat decision-making process.

Thanks for fixing my math. My colleague thinks Hilton Gold is valuable, he only takes a handful of trips a year but tries to stay at Hilton when he can, not enough to earn the status organically. He sees the $75 for the card as a one-time upfront breakfast charge for the year. I figured, since he's been battling if he should keep CSR or go to Amex, I'd post about it for him.

If free breakfast is what he was looking for as HH Gold, Amex Plat also gives free SPG Gold which could be linked to Marriott Gold and get free breakfasts at Marriott also.

Does your friend currently hold any HHonors credit card?

He does not, he's considering the Surpass though.

If he elects to get Hilton status through American Express Platinum he could also apply for the free Hilton card. This would earn 7 HH points per dollar at Hilton properties, without increasing the cost of option (2).

I don't know if any international travel is involved, but keep in mind that the Surpass has a 2.7% FX fee.
