cancelling card after annual fee posts

How long do you have to cancel credit card after annual fee posts?

Does it depend upon the card?

I had a Navy Federal Credit Union Visa and I cancelled it 12 days after the annual fee posted on the account. They said I still have to pay the annual fee.

Thanks for the info.

You have to cancel it right before the annual fee posts.

Each bank or credit union has its own policy. All the cards that I've ever had have given me 30 to 60 days.

That's the time frame I've always had in the past with other credit cards. Must be different with NFCU.

I always product change before the annual fee charges. I don't know why you'd wait til after.

You'd wait till after in the case when a card offers an annual bonus, like the CSP. In that case, you want to get and transfer the points and then call to cancel the card and get the AF refunded.

It depends on what kind of a card it is. Consumer cards issued by banks are I believe bound by a law that was passed in recent years (and I think that's where the 60 days comes from), but that doesn't apply to business cards and may not apply to non-banks like credit unions.

This time around I have time before my annual fee posts to the Navy Federal credit card. Has anyone had success trying to get the annual fee waived? I called, just once, today and the representative told me that it can't be waived. I am wondering if they were mistaken because they had to ask me what I meant when I asked if it was possible to have the annual fee waived.
