This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)
Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.
Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.
You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.
If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.
You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.
This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.
If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

Regarding official company representatives
Note that there is an official procedure for company representatives to register themselves with the FlyerTalk Community Director and verify their credentials. When that process is completed, the username will turn green in posts, rather than the standard blue.
Anyone who does not appear in green has not followed this procedure. Those posts should be considered the same as any other user's posts. It is important to remember that the moderation team does not generally monitor the veracity of any posts; it is up to you to judge a poster's content and history yourself.

Does it matter the amount of your travel related purchase in order to claim the "miles"?
If I were to charge a cruise for the entire amount say $2500 is it better to charge in smaller amounts? say $500 so that I can claim the 40k points against it and still have more to claim with the other charges.
I can't remember when I had the card for the first time and put $1,000 I had to use the 40,000 points towards it=$400 and then wasn't able to claim against the remaining amount. Is that right?

I have had this card when it was first offered and I have forgotten how it works in order to claim the most of the 40k plus the 5% after.

thanks for your reply, yet knowing that I can only claim a purchase once is it better to make smaller purchases as I explained of $500 vs one large purchase of $2500?

For those who have the Arrival Card I received an email reminding me of the changes occurring to the rewards program:
In October 2015, we sent you a letter informing you of upcoming changes to your Barclaycard Arrival™ MasterCard® Rewards Program Rules. To continue to provide this best-in-class travel rewards product and to simplify its structure, we'll be making the following changes, effective August 16, 2016:
Redemption bonus changes
The bonus miles you receive when you redeem for travel statement credits will be reduced to 5% miles back. At the same time, we’ll expand the 5% miles back to ALL redemptions — including travel and cash back statement credits, gift cards and merchandise. That means, every time you redeem miles, you’ll get 5% of your miles back to use toward your next redemption (for example, redeem 20,000 miles and get 1,000 miles back).
Additional changes
Purchases classified as Tourist Attractions (including expositions, botanical gardens, craft shows, museums and wineries) will no longer count toward qualifying travel purchases and travel statement credit redemptions.
Chip card
Chip technology is now available on the Barclaycard Arrival MasterCard. It’s the secure way to make purchases at chip-card terminals in the U.S. and abroad. To request a new card with chip technology, simply go to BarclaycardUS.com and select Request a Replacement Card under Account Settings.
The other features and benefits of your rewards program remain unchanged. Your Barclaycard Arrival MasterCard is designed to be one of the richest travel rewards cards available.
Thank you for your business.
Sincerely,
C. Walker

Nothing new here, this is the devaluation that was announced last year and only now is propagating to accounts of a certain age range.

My annual fee is due on the last day of the month. With the decline in value of the A+, it doesn't strike me as worth the fee anymore. Now just to find a replacement to use for my daily spending....
Edit: Will I be eligible for the Arrival bonus? "Earn 20,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days."

It seems I am just not a lucky guy. They said that was only for new applicants to that card.
I only got offered 1,000 points (so $10) after my first purchase after getting the regular Arrival. Kind of lame they said I'd lose any points for my current pay cycle since they consider me switched to the new card immediately.....
Anyway, I just didn't want to pay the fee and it seems there are other cards more worthy of being my daily driver these days. Just gotta find the time to do the research

Well you at least saved me a useless app, hp, and min spnd. Usually Barclay's cards let you get the sign up bonus over and over, so I was intending to reapply for the Arrival Plus. No reason to keep spending on my open Barclays cards now. Just like Chase, if the spend isn't worth it on it's own merits there is no good reason to use the card at all.

My annual fees were due last month and I paid it because I still have many travel expenses to redeem and I needed the card for travels to Europe as well. My question is I have some travel expenses below $100 that currently in my account to be redeemed up to 120 days. After August 16, can I still redeem those travel expenses that fall below $100? Or it will disappear from my account?

Please do, since it's possible that Barclays means new account the way Citi means it ie every new card is a new account. I doubt that since it says "member", not account, but it's possible. So if you do take one for the team, please et us know: 1) what they tell you when you ask 2) and again if/when you actually get the points to post. ^
