Rewards/Miles Program...Where to start?

Hello everyone,

I'm a complete novice when it comes to the world of credit cards and rewards program. (I have a very basic Chase credit card that is basically doing nothing for me now.)

My wife is going to start traveling for work and purchasing a number of flights/hotels on her own credit card, so everyone has been saying to get a credit card where you will get rewards/miles...the only problem is, we have no idea where to start or what any of this means.

Any advice for what I should be looking for, what the best cards are for a starter or where to even start would be GREATLY appreciated. Anything that you can offer will be a big help. Thanks everyone!

It really depends on what you want from a credit card: free flights? free hotel nights? cash back?

And unless your wife will be charging tens of thousands of dollars a year, the credit-card sign-up bonuses will be far more significant than the points/miles your wife will earn from just the credit-card charges.

Tell us more about what you want, and we can give you better advice.

Welcome to FT!

Also, where do you live (i.e. what airport(s) will she be flying out of)?

Thanks for responding. She will be flying out of Chicago (either Midway or OHare) and as far as what she will be spending, it won't be tens of thousands of dollars, just about one trip per month (all over the US).

Free flights/miles would be nice to cash in on...but it sounds like we may get our best 'bang for our buck' with the introductory offers on these cards? (Especially because some of them have pretty high annual fees after the first year...or so I've been noticing.)
