[Miles for Unauthorized CC Use] Hacking Leads to Miles
One of my AA Citibank cards was used in September at a Home Depot near Dallas, TX, with an unauthorized charge of $338. At all times, this little-used card has been in my possession, so the user likely used some type of hacking to get access to the card information and perhaps created a fake card.
Citibank alerted me to the charge, and it was disputed. About a month later, the charge was reversed after their investigation.
In the meantime, 338 miles posted to my AA account.
I expected them to be reversed, as well, but that has not happened, and several months have passed.
I think I have benefitted from hacking!

Was the charge actually reversed?
Or was the account closed with the balance(perhaps only the disputed amount), your balance transferred to a new account, and a credit of the disputed amount applied to your new account. This is different then reversing the transaction.
In my experience as soon as there is a fraud dispute claim that number was closed and any "balance" transferred to a new number as a single line item and separate line item credits for the disputed charges are applied.
If this is what happen i could see why the automated system that would deduct miles wouldn't keep track of it as the credits might as the computer is concerned might not be linked or related to the charges.

Someone with the knowledge and ability to make a fake card would never risk being on 12 different HD cameras for $338
Maybe he/she bought it from someone on the street but it still seems odd as it's asking to get caught.

As I recall, the account number was canceled, and a new card with a new number was sent out. The charge in question continued to show up on the new account. I even wrote a letter, being concerned that it was still there even though I had been assured that the matter had been taken care of.
Later, the charge was subtracted, with the new balance being zero. The next statement after that showed that "minus 338 miles" were being reported to AAdvantage. But that transaction never occurred, and now 3 months have gone by.
I believe the charge was subtracted before the next closing date on the account, but after the miles had been reported to AA.

a friend once traveled internationally and had the CC info stolen with about $15-20k charged in a 24 hour period
only reason he found out was because of a CL alert that chase had sent..
charges were disputed, account was closed, and then a credit was posted for each fraudulent charge
not only did he end up keeping the 20k miles, it bumped him over a spend limit and he got an additional bonus

There's a chance that if you use the card, you will have to spend $338 before you earn another mile. I found it interesting that BofA did claw back AS miles (400 or so) when I had a statement post with a negative balance due to a return.

I bought 6k in merch on eBay once. The guy never sent the items. I disputed through my credit card when paypal and ebay wanted to make me wait 30 days before refunding my money. Chase gave me a credit and I kept 6k in UR. Still wondering if they will catch it and it's been 6 months

This is the situation I'm in. There was a fraudulent charge on my Citi AA card (about $600 at one restaurant).They refunded the charge and I kept the miles but next time I used the replacement card (for a $97 charge) no miles posted. I called Citi and they told me I effectively had a 500 something miles negative miles balance tied to the card and I would not get any miles until this had been cleared thru purchases.

+1. This is how Citi operates their Advantage cards. Same with AMEX and SPG.

I just had a fraudulent charge of ~$750 reversed on my HH Amex.
The balance is now zero and I ma not using this card anymore ( just hold it for AXON's) so it will be interesting to see if any points post on a zero statement balance because of the fraud
