Upgrading cards

Hi All,

Question regarding upgrading cards. I received replacement cards in the mail today (did not request them) for an old Citi ThankYou card that I've apparently had since 2007. I think my dad signed me for the card and used himself as an additional user to help me build credit while I was in college (just did my creditkarma score for the first time and got a 771! thanks dad )

Anyway, I've been reading about all of these AA Citi card offers on here and was wondering if I called Citi, is there a way to upgrade this card to get some reward bonuses? This current ThankYou card hasn't been used ever, there is no balance and I'd rather take advantage of the offers that Citi has with other programs.

Tried looking through the forums to answer for this, but many people here actually downgrade cards to not pay annual fees etc. Is it possible to upgrade this card to one with a sign-on bonus or do I have to go through the whole application process with Citi to get another type of card?

Thanks for all your help. Waiting on my SW Chase (auto approved for $18K credit) and my permanent BB card to get here to start dipping my toes into the miles pool!

Normally you have to do a new application. That has been my experience as well.

Normally upgrade doesn't get much of perks including points/mileages. As Tofe said, you may need to apply for CITI AA card as new application, and you will get another credit line apply to new card, and typically you have to use new card to meet spending requirement within 3 months or so.

FYI, don't cancel Citi Thankyou card since your Citi Thankyou card will have longest credit history years, which will improve your credit score.

Upgrading--or even trying to upgrade--is a mistake as the previous reply posts very politely note.

I just want to be more emphatic. DO NOT UPGRADE!

Even if possible it will not get you a bonus and thus there is no good reason to do it.

Apply for a Citi AA card with a 50K or so bonus, and do the same for the Chase Sapphire Preferred (40K bonus of valuable ultimate rewards points which convert to UAL miles) and a Chase UAL Explorer card (50K UAL miles). Just be sure you can meet the needed spend on each card for the bonus. To do this you may need to spread out your apps as you usually have only three months to meet spend.

Good luck in our fascinating hobby!
