master card replacement.
i have had an LH barclay master card since it was issued(replaced something). costs $79 a year i think. accrues 1mile per $ spent. i thought HOLDING the card kept my lh miles alive. i now read the fine print, and i must make a monthly charge on that card to keep my LH miles, or fly LH. i have retired, and since lh also tags about $500 fees to a tatl, lh and the MC have become very undesirable. i plan to burn my lh miles(all 300k) in the near future, and cancel the card.
what is the mastercard of choice today. i went back a bit, and see only visa mentioned. i think it is costco that is a master card shop, and we spend a lot at costco, so need a MC.

The best place to look for a new Master Card is http://mastercard.us. It will tell you what's available from all banks.

Costco stores in the USA accept only American Express. Perhaps you are thinking of Sam's Club which I believe accepts MasterCard and Discover?

Actually Costco only takes credit cards with Amex network at their local stores. If you don't have an Amex card or have particular attachment or spending need w/visa or MC, you can go online to purchase Costco Cash card using any major credit card (visa/mc included, you need be a Costco member to make such purchase) - you can then use the Costco Cash card to pay at local stores.

You are correct Sam's only takes Mastercard and Discover. I use my Mastercard there weekly.

I have a Chase Subaru MC. 3% in Subaru Bucks. Capped at $500/yr. Spend the Subaru Bucks only for Subarus or for subie maintenance. No problem for me, 'cause we are a three Subie family.
If you or someone you love has or wants a Subie, the card is an easy choice.

Costco.com accepts all cards, but the store only AMEX. I find the Costco AMEX a good deal. The card fee and the Costco fee are the same, so if you are a Costco member anyway the card is a wash. Plus it has decent cash rewards.

Same bank, different card?
Chase defaults to Visa, but reports are you can get Sapphire, Sapphire Preferred and Freedom as a MasterCard.
I think Citi does the same, at least with some of their cards.
Depending on what's in your wallet right now, you might be able convert without an application or pull, if there are no appealing MC options available at this time.
