Does number of CC affect Credit Score?

I had 6 CCs when I started this year with avg age 4yrs/card -- including 2x AA 75k cards from late last year.

I got 2x Chase (Sap Pref + United Expl) earlier this year and just got 2x AMEX (Premiere Gold + SPG Buz) cards couple of days ago.

Just check my Credit Score in all 3... and it shows min 771 and max 780.

I just cancelled 1 AA Amex card thinking that I now have too many cards.

Can somebody please tell me how does number of CC affect Credit Score? Should I have cancelled the AA card, as it still had got 3 months remaining before I would have been charged annual fee.

Thanks!
