I don't believe you have to have a checking account; I don't have one and was offered the Freedom Amazon bonus. You just have to register for the categories for the month.

As a Chase checking customer, you will also earn 1 bonus point for each $10 of net purchases (which equates to 10% of base points earned), and an additional 10 bonus points for each individual net purchase.

If Staples or Office Max sell Amazon GC's, use the Ink Bold.
Do I need to go through UR mall to purchase it?

I would use InkBold and buy instore.
Best options if you had the cards would be:
Amex Blue Cash using it at a grocery store for 6 points
Amex Hilton Hhonors using it at a grocery store for 6 points
Amex Hilton Hhonors using it at a drug store for 6 points
Amex Simply Cash using it at an office supply store for 5 points
Chase Ink Bold/Cash/Classic using it at an office supply store for 5 points
