Seat assignment for basic economy

Flying CM for the first time on a basic economy fare. Can someone explain how seat assignment works? Will I be automatically assigned a seat with no option to change for free? Or will I be able to move to a different, non-premium seat during check in? Thanks in advance!

If you dont pay for your selection in advance you will be automatically/randomly assigned during check-in with no option to change it for free.

And if you decide to play the assignment roulette, I advise against paying on-line for the seat after check-in. It gets really quirky (Ive lost the payment money twice), in that case its better to do it over the phone.

Once on board can you move to an empty row (if they exist)? This was something I have done on other airlines pre-Covid.

Yeah I have done that in the past, my best guess is that it can still be done. No one is enforcing that pax stay in the assigned seat.
