If you don’t pay for your selection in advance you will be automatically/randomly assigned during check-in with no option to change it for free.
And if you decide to play the assignment roulette, I advise against paying on-line for the seat after check-in. It gets really quirky (I’ve lost the payment money twice), in that case it’s better to do it over the phone.
