Copa roundtrip MDE-LAX
I had a very useful back and forth on the Avianca Forum so based on advice, I booked my trip from Medellin to Los Angeles in Business, leaving March 9 and returning March 19. Overall, I would rate them a decent cut above the current Avianca direct service from Bogota to LAX. Very early morning check-in at MDE was delightful. I had three very light cardboard boxes which they were happy to tape together and count as my third piece. Lounge almost unoccupied but OK and the coffee was good. Short hop to Panama and checking in for LAX. Total moron at screening who aggressively confiscated my half used roll of 1" masking tape that I've flown with for several years! I tried to tell him he was confusing duct tape withe innocent masking tape but decided not to waste my energy. Full flight, comfortable seats but of course not lie flat. One flight attendant for Business, she was a substantial lady but very energetic and efficient. Breakfast was OK and a hot snack was served prior to landing. LAX was very quiet, they still seem to want the old Customs forms filled out but it was so empty I was out in 15 minutes, including an inspection of the cut orchid blooms I was carrying. Things of course started falling apart as my trip went on. I decided to call Copa to check all was OK with my return flight and that was difficult. I was on hold for 57 minutes but these are not usual times and once connected, the agent was very helpful and confirmed my return flight was scheduled and OK. Right after that the Colombian President came out with a new travel directive so I just got back in under the wire and with a mandatory fourteen day self-quarantine. Contrary to my expectations, the Business cabin was only 1/3 full on the return flight to Panama and even fewer to MDE. Meal on the return, a late night dinner, was excellent. tasty fish with quality vegetables and a really top class dessert sundae. Again a quick connection to MDE and arrival back to an airport that was obviously closing down. Bit of a reality check but these are unusual times. On my next Los Angeles, trip it will again be Copa!
