I will be flying to Hawaii this weekend with my family (total of 5 of us, two in first class) - all via Elite Reward Miles - what are the bagge payment rules for my family - do they get 2 bags free each beacuse they are traveling with me? I am Platinum but the only member of family with an Elite status. Thx

You get 3 free they must pay

If the miles came out of an elite account, they are entitled to 2 bags of up to 70 pounds free of charge. If y'all are still in one reservation or were originally in one reservation with an elite in it, they can have their bag fees waived at the airport. See the FAQ for more info.

This is not correct. Baggage allowance is dictated by the Elite who is travelling. You are correct that if an Elite is with them and they split their res, they can get the Elite allowance. However, if an Elite is not travelling with them, the Elite account is moot.

There have been reports here of reward tix booked via an elite account showing the EliteAccess notation and receiving elite benefits (baggage/boarding) when traveling, essentially inheriting the benefits of the elite status of the account.

And the two in BF definitely get the 3x 70 pound bags, no matter where the miles came from or how the tix were issued.

Correct... I've flown my mom and a friend using my miles (I'm Plat, they're Iron). They got the "Elite Access" and "Platinum" on their BP, along with the free baggage! I was very shocked that it worked this way, but I'm not complaining.

Unless the Elite members acct was from where the Miles were pulled, having an Elite traveling with You wont get you anything. As the Elite will then be the companion of a non-elite. In order to get the free bags the non-Elite/s must be the companions to the Elite member. Which means the Elite member must be the primary passenger on the PNR.

So if the Miles came out of the OPs acct and they are Plat, its 3 bags per person in FC and 2 bags per person not in FC, thats as long as all 5 are on the same PNR and its 70 lbs per bag.

If any non-Elite is not on the same PNR as the Elite member then they must pay per bag or just have someone thats allowed free bags and not taking the max they are allowed to check the bag in as theirs

(OT sort of like a free tkt as a Plat traveling on a non-Plats miles I would have to pay for a redeposit, yet a non-elite traveling on my miles and doesnt go theres no charge for a redeposit of the miles back to my acct.)

I don't know the circumstances of your booking. The 2 in first class could conceivably represent the Plat and companion upgrade.

If booking separate PNRs, you can maximize the baggage allowance by booking non-elites in F (thereby conferring 3-pice baggage allowance each) and the Plat in Y (still having 2-piece baggage allowance).

Of course my point is moot since you've already ticketed.

If it's a companion upgrade-how could that be so many days in advance? I thought those were done at check-in. And I thought they were not done on trips to Hawaii. I remember that my husband and I had to buy BF seats b/c not even Plats get upgraded on those flights. Has that rule changed?

I would wager a guess that the 2 BF passengers would get 3 bags each and the 3 economy would have to pay for their bags unless the BF passengers checked their kids' luggage as their own. (Or do they allow economy to check at least 1 bag on the long flights?)

Honestly, since CO started charging for bags, I never know what's what. I just know that I rarely check bags, but when I do I have yet to pay for one. I'm a Plat and am almost always BF/1st, so I don't know if it's the Plat Elite status that allows me to check a bag for free, or the 1st Class/BF status.

I was wondering about this myself, since next month my husband will be flying economy to Dublin and I will be BF. Does that mean that we can only check 3 bags free? Don't they even allow one bag per person on International flights for economy passengers?

Intl is 2 bags per person up to 50 lbs, an Elite gets up to 70 lbs and BF gets a 3rd bag up to 70 lbs

So if hes on your PNR its 5 bags at 70 lbs if hes not its 3 bags @70 and 2 @ 50

the whole question if a non-elite has to pay is only if 1 they dont have the Chase CC (which depending on the CC is 1 or 2 bags free Intl always 2 free even w/o the CC) 2- if they arent on the same PNR as the Elite member, meaning the PNR belongs to the Elite member 3- they arent on a Y or B fare (these grant free bags as well)

As a recently comped Plat (coming from DL), I have been looking all over co.com to find where it says Plats on TATL/TPAC flights get 70 lbs instead of the standard 50lbs. I know for the longest time, PM's on DL got 3 bags @ 70 lbs, even in Y, but it was an "undocumented" benefit.

Is this still a benefit? If so, is it documented (and I just haven't found where on co.com)?

Hmm, I feel pretty stupid now. On the Baggage Information page, I never thought to click on the header "Checked Baggage". I only clicked on the sub-heading below it, "fees", and read through tons of fine print, wondering where the heck the info was, thinking "why isn't there a nice chart?".
