Yea, early speculation was that the Captain (who was experienced on a smaller turboprop that had issues with tail icing, which required that the nose be raised to counter an impending stall) did the wrong thing when icing conditions affected the Q400, which he had flown for only a few months.

That's from memory; don't know if that's still a valid theory.
