Bump...
Doing EWR-SFO on Sunday, flight is zeroed except for ADFZ (1 each), so looking to maybe score the upgrade or a VDB. I do NOT have a seat assignment yet, and the seatmap is showing only exit rows available. If I do OLCI, I might have a good shot at nabbing one of those seats, but will that wreck my chance at VDB?

In short, if gunning for the next flight (or even next day, I don't really need to be in SFO until the 13th or so), is OLCI a bad idea?

I was asked to be on the list for VDB when checking my bags in, even when I did OLCI. I would check-in at OLCI, if only to grab that exit row, in case you do have to fly. You can still volunteer when you check bags.

Being checked in and having a seat assignment do not affect your VDB opportunities. It does help prevent an IDB but not a VDB.

Even checked in with a seat assignment you'll be able to volunteer if they need folks. And if they don't need you then you won't be stuck in a middle seat somewhere.
