In checking for upgrades to BF on return flights from Europe to IAH via EWR
for September, I find availability to EWR but the CO website shows no availability for any EWR-IAH. Is there any way to ensure/grab F/BF seats for the domestic leg at this time, like say talking directly to a CO phone rep?

Yes, you can call it in and get the one that is available and be waitlisted for the one that isn't. You won't get any miles back if the non-BF segment doesn't clear.

They won't give you a confirmed FC seat this far out for EWR-IAH. Only waitlist you.

Thanks for the quick replies. How close to one's departure date can one cancel the upgrade request without a penalty, assuming the domestic leg is not clearing the waitlist?

I just mean in general terms about the fees. If one's qualified to have a fee waived for redeposit, then that would apply too.
And the co-pay is refundable as well.
