I'm sure the people who work at CO would enjoy a chance to sit in FC. If reward ticket holders were giving an upgrade, then the people who work for CO would NEVER have a decent chance at FC.
You missed my point. I wasn't going to take away a seat from any CO worker, the plane left with 4 open seats.

Totally agree with the OP and JEdward's analysis of the issues.

If you're 30 minutes out and the GA has cleared everyone into standby/fc/non-rev/etc... There is NO reason why a reward tix shouldn't be upgraded domestically to F.

+1 with with the OP + J.Edward also. Can't hurt anything, only create some good PR with an elite pax. ^

If it is a meal flight and they fill it up,but its only catered at 75%,it opens up a can of worms. The FA may not know who gets to eat,the upgrade may honestly not remind the FA when food choices are being offered(I've seen this) and a paying FC pax may get gyped and their will be a new thread about FA/GA incompetence. If its done on non-food segments, the policy will be thrown in the FA/GA's face on the food segments with comments like "They did it on my last flight, why cant they do it on this flight?"

I think CO is correct in not filling up FC just for the sake of filling it up.

I think you misunderstand...if there is no food catering on a flight, what's the big deal about doing it...my statement implies that if it is a catered flight there might be issues.

Now I know that I cant get the upgrade because my trip was a reward ticket but would it be too much to add elite members on reward travel on the standby list even if they have the lowest priority? It was really annoying sitting in coach looking at all those rare open first seats when they had their nice dinner! This is more of a rant then anything but I don't see the big deal why Elite members on reward trips shouldn't be upgraded even if they are at the very bottom of the priority list (after everyone who paid for their ticket was upgraded).

Thoughts?
I kinda agree with this. If you are elite on reward ticket, you "paid" for your flight (just with miles), so denying the upgrade makes little economic sense for CO. IOW, instead of 250$ coach, you shelled out 25k miles (which CO sold to your partners at $.00xx per mile).

Then again, what do I know.

I believe the keyword for your situation is "displaced first class passenger" (i.e. passenger who should be in first class but does not have seat assignment). These passengers supposedly have priority for first class seats. You can search for threads using those keywords.
