When does status actually kick in?

I'm not sure of the best way to ask this question, so here's a shot...

I'm going to go over the hump tomorrow morning from silver to gold and I'm wondering when that change in status will actually take effect. I'm flying AUS-IAH-PHL on Wednesday 8/13 and I'd love to have a shot at that three day upgrade. However, if the flights don't post until Sunday or Monday, I'll miss out on the opportunity. So does the status take effect when the flights actually post to my online account OR when the flights are actually completed?

Thanks for the input...

Your status will change the day AFTER, the qualifying segment post to your onepass account.

As asked and answer many times here, once you complete the qualifying segment, give the Onepass service center a call and they might be able to expedite your upgrade to silver

Try CC

Try calling CC the day after your flight

I ran into this last year. I made the hump on the outbound portion of a flight. I was in SFO for over a week. I checked online before my return, and my status had changed, but, the status on my ticket was still Silver, and the gate agent couldn't change it. So, I would definitely call once you see the status change to make sure the reservation is updated.

Your new status takes effect the day after the qualifying miles post. If you are flying IAH-EWR-HKG and the IAH-EWR flight tips you to the next level the EWR-HKG flight will still credit at the old level since the change takes effect the next day.

Nothing will happen until the flights post, and for the OP it'll be inside the EUA window at that point. You can try calling OPSC to get an advance on the status since you're going to be earning it, but that has mixed successes.

Also, from the FAQ:

If your Elite status changes after you make your reservation and you remove and re-add your account number, your reservation will reflect the correct status. But if you do not do that this is how your upgrade will be handled by the Elite Upgrade Automation (EUA) and at check-in as reported here:
  • Non-Elite turns Elite. EUA will not recognize for an advance upgrade, and upgrade will not be offered at check-in. This is scheduled to be corrected with the 2008 Elite program
  • Elite turns Non-Elite. EUA will not recognize for an advance upgrade, and upgrade will not be offered at check-in
  • Elite changes to a different Elite tier. EUA will recognize most current Elite status for an advance upgrade, but will be added to the upgrade standby list at the former status upon check-in (also scheduled to be corrected with the 2008 Elite program)

Here's the current prose at Elite Qualification Requirements:
You always receive the highest status for which you qualify. As you qualify for a higher level, your Elite status will be upgraded automatically and a new Elite card will be mailed to you. Benefits are effective the day after attaining a new Elite status.
The WayBackMachine confirms that this was also the prose back in 2006, when it was an issue for me.

I successively argued at that time that this was a promise to provide the new status the day after I had flown the qualifying EQMs. To edit this prose would involve disclosing that the automatic process has a time lag.
