I just noticed this in the travel re-accommodations section of CO.com:
Why is the start date listed as Feb. 27? Service on CO metal doesn't start until March 29. I wouldn't expect them to let you switch from the CO metal to the VS metal flights. I wonder how LHR bookings are looking.
Original Travel Dates: Feb. 27, 2008 - May 15, 2008
Change fees and/or additional fare collection will be waived for chages from London, England (LGW - Gatwick) to London, England (LHR - Heathrow) booked in the original class of service on the same travel dates as originally ticketed.
If the new travel is in a different class of service, change fees will be waived, however, additional fare collection will apply.

I wondered about the bookings too, because a couple of weeks ago I saw tons of standered BF fawards to LHR. (In May i think, i believe it was discussed here)
I hope their large investment in LHR paysoff and does not become a loss.

I figured that someone booked RT from the States to LGW (outbound 2-27 or later) would be allowed to change their return such that they could now leave from LHR if it occurred after CO starts service. That's my best guess.

I was about to post this yesterday too! But I thought someone MUST have posted it before and I'd just missed it.
I booked a flight to LHR, the late evening from IAH, early April, and it's wide open, according to the seat map (which I know isn't reliable)..... I was surprised.
I would think that some people/uninformed TAs who booked into/out of LGW might not have known about the LHR option, so as knowledge of that option becomes more widespread some will "wish I would have known that", and now they can rebook to LHR.

If you are in coach and want lounge access - LHR is not for you. PC members have access to the Emirates Lounge in LGW and there is a DL lounge for PC members and CO Plat (but I understand the DL lounge is closing).
For now there are no lounge options for either PC members or SkyTeam Elite Plus (CO Plat) at LHR - that are accessible if you are flying CO - contrary to the CO PC web site.
