I am going to be flying IAH-DEN-AUS and need to buy the ticket pronto. However, I may need to come back to DEN after AUS (otherwise I am being picked up there)
Can I book a refundable ticket but instead of refunding it, just change it to add the segment? Or am I better off booking a standard ticket and paying the change fee?

You're going to buy IAH-DEN-(xIAH)-AUS, right? I would imagine that buying the AUS-(xIAH)-DEN after the fact on a different ticket would be way better/cheaper than buying a refundable now and/or changing the ticket. If I'm missing some of the segments in there that might change things, but I don't think it will.
