2 pax, 1 reward res. how much to change flights?

2 pax, 1 reward res. how much to change flights?
ive got myself and my brother on a lengthy reward res. Id like to change it a bit to eliminate a connection. do i have to pay $35 per person or $35 for the reservation?
we shouldnt have to pay anything. CO, and all the others, it seems, make it so damn hard to plan a trip, that changes should always be free.
you've got to jump at the chance just to book a trip with four connections on partner airlines becuase that's the only thing open. then two weeks later, better options open up. you end up getting penialized for planning ahead. its such a crap shoot. anyway, that's my rant.

At least it's much cheaper than change fees on most discount coach tickets.
