question about canceling a ticket

Hey everyone,
I cannot use a non refundable ticket I booked for next month due to my company changing dates. If I cancel, do I get to use that value towards a future flight or is it lost? Should I cancel or just not check in and let the flight pass? I've heard a few different answers so anyone who knows for sure..thanks for your help.

You get the value towards a future flight (the whole value is applied to the new flight, but you have to pay the change fee).

The new flight does not have to be to the same place; you can make a completely new trip with the money.

AFAIK there is no reason not to cancel a wholly unused ticket if you will not use it.
