You certainly could get an EUA on your original flight, but not on the standby one until you're cleared onto it. By the time you've cleared the standby list it's almost certainly too late for EUA, and probably even for a battlefield upgrade.

Happened to me one time. Was flying ORD-EWR. Was standing by for an earlier flight and when that cleared they gave me a F seat. Flight was packed too and the stand by list was long...

some get struck by lightning, others hit the lottery, I got to eat the most improbable reuben sandwhich ever.

Thanks, that is what I figured. What about confirmed standby ($25 fee I think)?

Happened to me two Saturdays ago standing by for a Saturday AM CLE-TPA flight, actually cleared my companion (non-elite) as well........I'm currently Gold. They cleared me onto the flight as soon as the agent made it to the podium and cleared the standby list about 10 minutes before general boarding.

Light route, tourist heavy and you've got a chance....

The earliest you can do the $25 same-day confirmed change is 3 hours prior to departure. It just so happens that the last EUA sweep before it is turned over to the airport occurs right at the 3 hour mark. At that point you would be placed on the waitlist for an upgrade according to elite level and fare class but your check-in time would reflect time you were confirmed on the new flight so if it came down to that deciding factor you would be pretty low on the list.
