Continental baggage allowance
According to the Continental website:
2 Checked Bags: Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece.
Does that mean that the total allowed is 100 lbs. over the two pieces?

No. Each bag has a max of 50lbs. You cannot have one bag that is 100lbs. However, your profile says you are a platinum, the max weight for elites is 70lbs.

Each individual piece must be 50 pounds, not the sum of the two. For example, if one piece is 60 pounds and the other is 40, you'll have to transfer 10 lbs. into the other suitcase.
-reg person=2 bags each max. 50 lbs
-Elite= 2 bags each max. 70 lbs
-1st class/ businessfirst= 3 bags each max. 70 lbs.
