I've spent three separate trips in San Juan over the last couple years.

The Ritz-Carlton was nice ...but not a good value for the $$ (I was on the company tab for that one or wouldn't have stayed)

Intercontinental we enjoyed quite well.

My favorite was the El San Juan by far. We were there jsut a few weeks ago and they were running expedia specials. The ESJ is in a transition to the Waldorf Collection atm I think, maybe that's why the discount.

Well the manager didn't make it hard to press him for a better discount -- I just don't like to settle for the 'pedestrian' discount!:D;) I'm not really a big negotiator -- I wish I had better bargaining skills when it comes to getting deals in other countries/cultures -- where bargaining is expected!

I'm a horrible negotiator in foreign bazaars and such. I just keep on splitting the difference until they say yes, after making one unacceptably low offer to see how far the seller will initially come down.

Well, I would think that the idea of an 'unacceptably' low offer is all relative -- you don't know if you don't try!;) I think the idea of potentially walking away & not making a sale is fuel for the seller to be willing to offer a better bargain! I'm really not comfortable in the position of negotiating -- but the 'bargain-hunter' side of me is the motivating factor!:D

It seems like this would be early for you to be up on a Sunday!:D Well, I'm still in bed -- as I post this -- not looking to get up, but body is craving food & coffee!:D

Trust me, I make sure it's unacceptable. :D If the guy in the Spice Bazaar in IST first says 10, I say 2. He comes down to 8, I say 6. 7 in the middle wins.

You are too funny! -- I would think that your physical presence would lead to some pretty quick bargain!;):D

That has never been my experience in financial negotiations. OTOH, the guy who challenged me to get out of my car so I could see the damage I did to his bumper...I told him I could see the damage just fine while seated, and he pressed me to get up and get out of the car. I did. He shut up and said no worries.
