using points to upgrade to BF transatlantic

I have applied to upgrade the return flights later in the year for myself and partner, from EWR to EDI. Using points

The Co web site states "BusinessFirst Select Economy Fares Upgrade Policy: Members who purchase fares other than Y or H* can pay a non-refundable service fee in addition to the miles in order to upgrade to BusinessFirst. Members will only be charged the service fee when the BusinessFirst upgrade has been cleared"

Can anyone clarify if cleared just refers to being added to the waitlist or is it something more hopeful that?

thanks

If you buy a Y or H fare, you pay the applicable upgrade points are subtracted from your account. If you buy a cheaper fare, you must also pay a service fee as well as the miles if the upgrade clears. If you're flexible on dates but really want to upgrade, I would recommend paying the H fare. Before considering Y, check Continental.com for discounted B/F fares.

I will try to answer your question.

if you buy H/Y when you request the upgrade the milage will be deducted from your account. If you get upgraded, enjoy. If you don't, you need to call back and have the milage redeposited into your account.

if you buy a non-H/Y ticket then the same happens to the milage part but they take a credit card number. They will not bill the card until you have been upgraded. That part is non-refundable.

I dont think this affects you but the upgrade is only for the transatlantic portion of the trip. If you have a connecting flight in the US, you will be upgraded only if there is space but the fee and milage will still be applicable even if you get only the transatlantic portion upgraded.

Wirelessly posted (HTCP4350-Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC))

You are only charged the fee when (or if) the upgrade actually clears. Being placed on the waitlist does not count as clearing and CO will only charge you the fee, if applicable, when you actually obtain the upgrade.

Note that in order to waitlist CO will deduct the required number of miles, but again, should the upgrade not clear you won't be charged the fee and you'll have the miles redeposited.

Sorry it was getting late when I posted my question, I missed off the fact that CO have already debited the 2x $450 service charges from my credit card.

My other halfs account shows the debit of points and waitlisted.

My account seems to have been given a new itinerary number for the flight and crashes when you try to access the details. although they emailed the correct details to me.

So as they've taken the money should I get my hopes up or think clerical error as they hold my $900 dollars for the next 4 1/2 months.

thanks

If they have charged your credit card, then you should have the upgrade, period. I've done this many times and never been charged the fee until I actually got the seat assignment in BF. If you don't have an upgrade officially now, they should credit your account for these monies. I would call customer service asap.

Don't forget, it's $450 each way, so you're seeing the two charges for the outbound. You'll get an addition 2x $450 hit to your credit card if the return upgrade happens:

Service fees of up to $450 each way apply when flying on fares other than Y or H (except Hawaii).
