Corpus Christi Based Crew?

Friday, the Corpus Christi Caller Times reported Chautauqua hired 75 employees to be based in Corpus Christi. (Full Story) Here's the sentence that puzzled me:

The company, a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, hired 50 pilots and 25 flight attendants during an open house recruitment last month to serve as crew members on Continental Express flights. Those jobs were transferred from Houston.

Why would you base those jobs in CRP instead of IAH?

Worse yet the sentence:

In January the airline started to operate the first of 24 50-passenger Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft as a Continental Express carrier.

The Express Jet ERJs we have flying CRP-IAH as Continental Express are like flying Business first compared to the Delta Connection CRJ's I've flown. If they are basing crew here, I guess they will be serving here. Bummer.

Preparation for the summer months?

I somewhat like the CRJ-200 but I am of the belief that a 45 minute ERJ flight would be better served by a Dash-8 or B1900.

Outstation basing is popular among the regionals. SkyWest does it all the time with bases like Fresno, Monterey, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo and so on. Piedmont does it with New Bern, Salsbury and other locations. It doesnt matter so much where the domicile is for the crew just as long as it feeds into the hubs properly.

That would turn the 45 min flight to a hub city into ~1.25 hrs.

I think that's ok. (Or they could use a Dash-8). I flew WN from HOU-AUS and it was 26 minutes in the air, 45 from gate to gate. To me, that's the biggest waste of jet fuel, and the plane wasn't even near full.

I fly to and from CLT-ROA on Dash-8s and it's just fine by me. It is probably a 30 minute trip on a ERJ or CRJ but it makes sense to me for them to fly a D8 in there, plus I get a more comfortable ride.

Yup, if you look at the schedule, starting around April 1st, about half of the flights are CRJ while the other ones are ERJ. After my flight on the CRJ to MSP, I will avoid those like the plague. I miss those old days when we used to have a 733 IAH-CRP at 9 p.m. and CRP-IAH at 7:20 a.m..

I was looking at it more from a scheduling perspective. For example, they recently changed my flight from an ERJ to a B1900 (and to a Dash 8 when they get those in), and they had to move the flight back another 25 minutes or so, so that people could still make connections at CLE.

That's what I meant about the increase in time to the hub. Not really a problem going from hub->sat city, but coming the other way could cause some scheduling issues.
