Interesting issue re: upgrading to A fare

Ethical issues aside, as my question is purly theoretical, as a search revealed nothing.

I booked a T fare for a quick flight to Florida several months ago. After my initial purchase, I decided to pay the difference to upgrade my ticket to FC (A Fare).

If I were to cancel my entire trip, would I receive a refund of my ENITRE fare (ie. the cost of the T fare PLUS the difference I made up to make it an A Fare), or would I be forced to "eat" the portion of my A fare that was originally booked as a nonrefundible ticket.

Thanks

I suspect that you wouldn't get the "T" portion back. I know I ran into a similar situation where I upgraded to a Y fare.

It is in the rules of your fare. A non-refundable fare is always non-refundable unless you meet the provisions of the fare to make it refundable if it is even there. The provisions, if they exsist, are usally for death or serious illness. Most fares will state if the fare has been upgraded, that the non-refundable portion of the fare will always remain non-refundable. Also, if one were to mix fares on a ticket, the most restrictive set of rules would apply.

Hi jk12, as mentioned by ContinentalFan, whenever you upgrade to a fully-refundable fare from a non-refundable fare, the non-refundable portion (which in your example would be the "T" fare) will remain non-refundable. The incremental fare paid to get the fully-refundable fare is what will be refundable.
