Upgrade Question
I am flying (Elite Gold) EWR to SJO on December 20. I have myself waitlisted for an upgrade for 15K miles.
There is one seat left in the BF (F), depending whom you ask as to what market it is. Obviously CO is trying to sell the seat, now if they can't sell:
1. Do I get any priority in upgrading or would this unsold seat become a part of the EAU bucket?
2. Or if it is a BF; do they fly with this seat empty?
I am assuming that I am the only one waitlisted for upgrade with OnePass miles.
I called the Elite Desk three times and got a different answer every time

SJO is not a BF market, regardless of what aircraft operates it. It is a EUA-able flight.
If you mileage upgrade does not clear the seat will go out for EUA, and the chances of it flying empty are virtually nil. I'm not 100% sure on your priority, but I believe that some people say a mile upgrade is supposed to get priority at the airport for a battlefield upgrade, but I'm not sure that the GAs ever really get it right.

I'm pretty sure CO Insider has gone on record here saying that the waitlist disappears 24 hours prior to the flight. Prior to this time you do have priority over free elite upgrades, but after this time, including at the airport, you do not.
Some have reported success in getting Gate Agents to assign them higher priority at the airport, but I don't think it's supposed to happen anymore.
If you search a little you may find the thread. Try "upgrade waitlist miles/mileage" or something.
