Upgrade Waitlist Help...

Upgrade Waitlist Help...
I am new to this site, so if this question has been posted I appologize.
I am Platinum with Continental. I am flying tomorrow night from EWR to PHX with a companion. I bought the 2 tickets and was waitlisted when trying to use miles for the upgrades. As of this morning, we were still waitlisted but there are 3 open seats in first class.
My question is does the waitlist have any chance at this point of processing? I have heard that this close to flight time, it won't but I am not sure.
If not, should I just check in as normal and pray for a miracle companion upgrade?
