The cheapest fare on those dates are U/O for $974. Upgrade fees for those fares are $400 and $350 respectively. So, if he pays his $200 change fee, and both upgrades clear, it'll cost him about $1,900. Still a good $700 lower than the $2,600 he's paying now.

Anyways, I've never played, and will never play, the HoKeY game.

I thought most of those H fees were fully refundable...anyway, I would never buy the H fare without confirming the upgrade at the time of ticketing. No upgrade, no buy. It won't work for alot of travelers with fixed dates, but I will book my travel around R availability so I am confirmed at ticketing, otherwise I am either not going at all, or not going to pay H. Either way, I am not going to sit in coach for 14 hours.

If you're dates are fixed, dump the H unless they can confirm the upgrade (unlikely for these dates) - just buy the lowest fare and waitlist.
