Experience using a refundable ticket

Hi all,

I am interested in gaining access to the Presidents Club in the near future, however I myself do not plan on flying. I have the Plat AMEX card which I have used before, but only when I had a ticket on CO. From what I have read here, I could purchase a refundable (I assume Y) ticket and cancel either online or over the phone from inside the PC. Does anyone have any experience doing this? I'd prefer not to do this and almost feel guilty, but I need access on this particular day and would prefer not to purchase a day pass when I already have access using the AMEX.

Also, it's been a while since I've been at a PC in EWR. Do any of them have a view of the runway, etc.?

-Troy

Platinum Amex requires a same day boarding pass for entry in the PC. At least that's what I've always thought.

The only way you will be allowed past security is with a Gate Pass or a Boarding Pass, if you had a President's Club Membership you could obtain a Gate Pass. You are using your Amex Platinum, you will need a Boarind Pass, buying a refundable ticket is about the only way.

Why feel guilty? It's refundable to be refunded.

The lower level PC has a view of some gates and some runway...

It's trivial to do. The refund gets processed in a couple of days. If you're doing this at EWR make sure you don't buy a ticket on a flight that leaves from a terminal other than the one you want entry to. When I've done this I've chosen low-load flights that departed well after I planned on being at the airport. I then asked to be de-boarded from the flight fairly promptly so I didn't affect upgrades/loads on the flight.

Yes, it's good form to get un-checked-in when "circumstances change" and you need to cancel your flight.

Why not look at BumpTracker and try to double dip by buying a ticket on a sold out flight? Get the $250 voucher and then refund the ticket. If you are Elite, you can use your benefit to buy yourself onto an oversold flight and thereby increase your chances.

I believe someone, probably deep in the bowels of Continental's accounting/revenue management department just suffered from a major heart attack upon reading this.
