The Quotes of Gordon Bethune

I thought it would be timely for us to start collectiong them, hopefully for use as he is fired by the board.

Here's a start...please do add.

************************************************** ********

Continental Airlines' top executive apologized Thursday for referring to rival United Airlines as "HIV-positive" - a remark that prompted outrage from AIDS advocacy groups.

Since 1978 the record pretty well shows that no start-up airline . . . has really been successful, so the odds of JetBlue having long-term success are remote. I'm not going to say it can't happen because stranger things have happened, but I personally believe P.T. Barnum was, in that respect, correct.

It's not a testosterone-driven industry any longer. Success is making money, not in the size of the airline.

We will not cut benefits from OnePass, our industry-leading frequent flyer program, because we remain committed to rewarding our most loyal customers.

Not admitting mistakes is what causes organizations to get sick. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over in exactly the same way and expecting different results.

Business travelers "are kind of like the canary in the mine shaft," said Gordon Bethune

Continental Airlines CEO Gordon Bethune told Bloomberg News that executive pay caps are "stupid."

In 1995, Continental Airlines shuttered its Continental Lite operation after it lost $300 million in 15 months, causing Chief Executive Gordon Bethune to later remark: "By chasing away the customers, we lost more money than we made."

The Financial Times Deutschland quotes Continental Airlines Chief Executive Gordon Bethune, "We'll see at least two more bankruptcies, one in Chicago and one in Phoenix."

Gordon M. Bethune usually struts with enough Texan swagger to stave off the clouds of gloom and doom. He drives a Porsche, rides a Harley and takes spins in the Boeing jets flown by Continental Airlines, which he happens to run. But lately, Bethune has been reduced to throwing up his hands. "We're a stupid industry led by stupid people," he said, his face twisted somewhere between a grimace and a smirk.

For some reason TSA thinks that dumping out our passengers' underwear at the gate after it has already been dumped out at the security screening checkpoint makes TSA look like they are on top of things,'' [Continental Airlines Chairman Gordon] Bethune said in a speech to the Wings club of New York in June.

well, that one IS a good one At least he is on the same page as the rest of us in suggesting the TSA is a waste...but his other quotes are just gems

Some people should learn over time, that it is better to keep their mouths shut if they cant control what comes out of it. Thank goodness no one is organizing a boycott...if they lost any more revenue, they would start enhancing Onepass again!

Yeah, I gotta agree. This is one of the few quotes that indicate there is not merely a short circuit path from the idea generator in Gordo's head to Gordo's mouth.

The TSA is largely a useless, stupid waste of $$$.

Oh yeah, I forgot:

Gordo: "If you have to be in San Francisco for a presentation tomorrow, you are going. If I say it's $1,200 or it's $800, you are still going."

Maybe for Continental you can say "Gordon gone"

Let's assume for a moment that the Board grows tired of his almost uncontrollable ability to alientate everyone...and allows him to find alternate employment. Do we have any 'friends' in CO upper management? Anyone who could take over, who is a friend of the frequent flyer and a supporter of Onepass?

We all pick on Gordon alot (with a mouth like that, it's impossible not to), but they could replace him with someone who could give us alot more grief. At least with Bethune, we pretty much know what we're getting, and when things improve, he's likely to stop trimming the benefits.

To be honest, I think that is the basis of Gordon's appeal to the employees, the board and customers. You know what he's thinking, he doesn't sugarcoat or PC anything. He does step in it sometimes, but when you are that open about what you think and you don't dodge questions, it's going to happen.

You also always know what this guy was thinking, but he was also lying through his teeth, and he's also gone

The site you are linking to is down, but I take it you are now comparing him to the Iraqi Information Minister? Not hardly. When did expressing an opinion (Gordon's strong point) become lying through your teeth?

That's been beat to death. Sorry, but I fall into the marketing/poor communication camp and not the "Gordon lied to us on purpose" camp. Wait, do I hear the word "apologist" coming my way?

Lied to us on purpose or lied to us by accident...Still lied...Still never apologized...Still shooting his mouth off.

As I said in the other thread, it's time to look past the blowhard and try and figure out why CO's board is not acting:
___________________________

The truly sad part is the state of the CO Board of Directors - board of emasculated lemmings is more like it. We all already know that Gordo-the-liar thinks he's god. But for the board to still believe he's god after he's performed so badly in every measurable area (stock price, revenue, public opinion, customer satisfaction, etc.) just shows them to be at best stupid and at worst conspirators.
