Problem with on-line check-in

Problem with on-line check-in
Does anyone know why when I try to check in for a flight tomorrow I keep getting "We are unable to complete the check-in process at this time. Please proceed to the airport for assistance"? Is this a common occurence? I already have seat assignment and I am within the thirty hour limit.

1. All of your flights are operated by Continental, Continental Express, Continental Connection by Cape Air, Continental Connection by CommutAir or Continental Connection by Gulfstream International Airlines.
2. All flight segments are wholly within the U.S.
3. Your itinerary contains a total of four flight segments or less.
4. You are traveling with less than ten persons in your party.
I received the same response last week due to items 1 & 3 from this list. (CO codeshare operated by NW and 7 flight itinerary)

Unless you are flying with non CO operated flights you have probably been selected for not-so-random special security screening. This happens when:
*You book your flight less than 3 days in advance.
*You are on a one-way or non-roundtrip itn
*The ticket purchaser has a different name than the traveler.
I am never able to check-in because of this, terribly annoying.

Another reason why you may get that message is if they cannot give you a seat assignment at the time you check-in online. Had it happen to me last night.

I am usually able to check in, but only for the outbound portion i.e you are supposed to be able to check-in up to 30 hours in advance, but can never seem to check in for both online, even when the return flight is within 30 hours.
