NW upgrade...???
Flying NW with OP silver # in reservation in December from AUS to MCO. Should we try and upgrade with miles (have many)or wait for upgrade via OP silver?

I'm assuming that you will connect at IAH...
If you're flying on Sunday(pm), Monday, Thursday (pm) or Friday, your upgrade chances are slim from IAH-MCO.
It is mainline metal (no RJs) all the way there and back. (You're not burning upgrade miles with segments on a Jungle Jet.)
If you really want to ride up front, I'd use the miles.

I've had excellent results upgrading on NW, albeit as a platinum.
This year all 44 of my segments have been on NW, since there are only RJ's out of STL.
Check ITN, as NW is a little more accurate regarding P vs. F seats (CO terms, A vs. F).

What is NW being CAGEY about? Why don't you look up the itinerary on NWA.COM and check out the equipment. Most likely, MEM-MCO is an A319 or 20. At SILVER level in any affiliated FF program, I would not count highly on a HUB - MCO upgrade given the popularity of that destination.

I just flew MSY-MEM-MCO on NWA as a Platinum and was upgraded but I have no way of knowing if there were Silvers in the cabin. I would take into account time of flight and if it is a holiday time of year. I was very glad my upgrade cleared because the back of the bus was full of Disney bound kiddies.
The flight was nice but nothing special. We did get a meal MEM-MCO which suprised me.

You mention flying in Dec, obviously if its during the holiday period you could be seriously out of luck for any EUA type upgrade.

AUS-MEM is on a CRJ - no 1st class!
I would not use miles for the short flight from MEM-MCO (+- 2 hours) and hope for the automatic upgrade. Would not cry if I don't get it.

Thanks for all the advice folks!
Think I will save the miles since it does now look like an ERJ
to MEM
Anyone figure out why NW only does seat assign 90 days out???
