Upgrading to GUM

Hello,

I'm an AA guy, but I'll be traveling to Guam next week on Continental (most likely IAH-GUM on CO001). This will be my first flight on Continental. I'm interested in upgrading to Business/First by opening a OnePass account and transferring some miles (either from my Amtrak Guest Rewards Account or via Diners Club).

I went to the Continental site on upgrades, but I'm still confused. Could someone tell me how many miles will be needed to upgrade along with any additional fees that must be paid. I probably won't be travelling on a full-Y class fare. Also, will that upgrade also be applied to any connecting flights into IAH (as I'll proabbly be flying CO into IAH from the east coast)?

Also, what should I expect of Business/First traveling to/from Guam?

Thanks,
FlyerBeek

A: Not all fares are upgradeable with mileage by non-elites. You might want to do a search.

B: Even assuming that you can complete your transfer in time, you cannot assume that there will be upgradeable seats available.

C: Your upgrade (if you qualify and if it clears) is valid on all segments.

Upgrademe...you forgot

D) The 72-hour rule. If you cant upgrade and are put on the waitlist all hope of an upgrade expires 72 hrs before a flight. Thats the way gordo bakes the cookies over there....

The other catch to this upgrade issue is that IAH-GUM includes the much-demanded IAH-HNL segment that is notorious for lack of upgrade (and award) availability.

If you haven't set your travel plans, you may also want to consider travelling to GUM via NRT; availability for upgrades and award travel on the US-Tokyo routes are wide open and I haven't had any problems upgrading the NRT-GUM segments. The "K" fares to GUM via NRT are also reasonable and don't need any additional fee to supplement the mileage redemption.

I'm actually going to GUM via NRT this weekend.

I'll second the good advice in the foregoing three posts.

Weatherboy, any chance of making it up to SPN? If not, and you're interested in running around the jungles of Guam and drinking beer afterward, you may wish to meet the "Guam Hash House Harriers" across from the Pacific News Building (near the Academy of Our Lady of Guam, next to the Cathedral) in downtown Hagta on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Bring $5.00, and when introduced during "religion" after the run, tell them that "Leave It" of the Saipan Hash sent you. http://www.hashguam.com/

Robin, you and your family are welcome to visit any time. (The drinking age on Guam is only 18, compared to 21 here.)

Not much surfing on Saipan though, unless you like being rolled around on coral reefs. There is one place way out by the mouth of the channel, but not worth lugging boards all the way across the Pacific. Wind surfing (in season -- Jan to May -- is another matter).

The SH3 is known as the "kindler and gentler Hash" because we don't have a bunch of SEALs and Marines running in it like our Mother Hash on Guam. "Why do all the palm trees on Saipan point south?" "Because Guam s....!" But we have plenty of battle sites, caves, jungle, or whatever to traverse.

Very occasional exceptions have been made to our "No kids on the Hash" tradition if there is no underage drinking and it's not too blatant.

But I don't know how good a time you and Mr. Fishbait would have chaperoning.

I'll be in Guam in a week from tomorrow. Well actually I won't be there but I'll be on my way. Thanks to CO's computer pricining Full Y tickets with a 50 percent discount, me and a couple of friends decided to make the trip, which will give us all Plt for the year. I mean who could pass up reduced upgrade prices, and the Y mileage bonus

I wanted to visit SPN, but CO reduced the service there and made it tough to stop there in between NRT and GUM. If I make it out to GUM again, I will try to stop in and visit

I'll be in GUM Tuesday and Wednesday after being in NRT on Sunday/Monday. Depending how well I'm faring with jetlag and time zone/date change stuff, I may just take a wander into the jungle
