Are they really sure?
from a press release today regarding expanded service... "... Fortune ranked Continental the No. 2 Most Admired Global Airline and No. 30 Most Admired Global Company in March 2002. For more company information, visit continental.com"
so my question is...are they really sure about that? Given the downturn in customer service over the past couple years, which has changed from a downturn to a virtual freefall since 9/11...where do they get this info? On what basis did Fortune make these statements?
here are the links to the appropriate pages (pardon if the links dont show up clickable):
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/mosta...20,129,00.html
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/globa...055,68,00.html
Interestingly enough, there is also a link in there where a Merryl Lynch analyst "upgrades" his airline picks to include the following stocks:
Continental
Delta
Northwest
When he wrote the article (5/02), their stock prices were:
CAL - 23
DAL - 26
NWA - 17
Today they are at:
CAL - 5.75
DAL - 9.27
NWA - 11.20
Looks like NW held up the best of the bunch...but it really galls me how CO form-fits information into their press releases and website to show they are still the best...no where in their public face do they acknowledge they have product and service problems which need to be addressed. I might suggest they start eating some humble pie and use their alleged creativity to figure out what is going wrong and how to fix it.

"Here's how we did the calculations. For the industry rankings, the Hay Group consultancy took the ten largest companies (by revenues) in 58 industries, including large subsidiaries of foreign-owned companies. They then asked 10,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts to rate the companies in their own industries based eight criteria: Innovation, financial soundness, employee talent, use of corporate assets, long-term investment value, social responsibility, quality of management, and quality of products and services."
Customer service is not a large component of this survey. If you'd like to make an argument about customer service, I'm sure there's a survey that illustrates your point.
yawn.

It's kind of funny, I bough a little CO stock in early 1995 after I had a sense that the "Go Forward Plan" was actually going someplace. At the time the stock cost about what it's worth today.
I sold that stock in the summer of 2001 after failing to obtain a satisfactory resolution to a couple of customer service issues. Although I missed the $60 peak stock price, I didn't do too badly selling for a little over $40.
