SMF still does random screens even though you need a boarding pass to get into the gates at Terminal A (CO, SW, DL, HP).

Only 20 of us getting onto a flight to BUR (diff airline, but)...no "pre-selected" special screeners. I was the lucky one. Second in line, last on the plane.

The TSA is BS!!!

BNA no TSA
ATL TSA
MCO TSA

A list appeared in USA Today of the handful of Airports now testing random gate screening, a welcome change indeed, looks like could be nationwide by Feb 2003

The best solution I've seen to date is NWA in BUF. The gate agents board people needing extra time and assistance, then "exit rows ONLY" (whom they select for "random" screening), then first class, then by row. In this way, they select steerage pax (exit rows) for the cavity search and let their elites on board without a hassle and without pissing off the TSA folks glaring at them for not having someone to fondle.

Went thru EWR A, B, and C several times this week. No gate screening. However, random screening still exists. It is just done at the security lines rather than the gate.

A truly welcome change will be when the random harassment stops completely.

Last week there were no TSA agents around for my PHX-LAS flight on HP.Also last week I watched an HP flight LAS-SFO boarding next to my departure gate and no TSA agents were around. They did appear for my LAS-CMH flight but didnt pull any F passengers or Elites out of line for screening. They appeared more interested in talking amongst themselves than screening pax.

It's good beacuse they can do less damange that way, but bad because we are paying them to gossip. We should just thin the herd down to the number needed to operate the checkpoints without randomly harassing anyone and either furlough or relegate to latrine detail all the excess..

I agree that there are far too many people at most locations for the amount of traffic at any given time. For example, there is almost a 100% chance you'll get the full treatment if you enter DIA across the bridge to Concourse A. These guys are frankly bored and work you over just to pass the time. Although it's nice to not wait 90 minutes or more to get through security, it seems like there's a lot of taxpayer waste now.

Over the course of a ton of flights, I've actually never gotten an extra search at the DIA Concourse A bridge, and I look pretty shady. I'll admit that it's a little intimidating, though. There are at least 20 TSA guys - pretty much always outnumbering the passengers waiting to go through. A little Kafka vibe, I think.

My complaint - the gate screeners often have these metal detector wands designed with big holes in them. When the guys are just sitting around, they spin them with their fingers in the holes, dropping them all the time. Forgetting that it's unprofessional, I hate the idea that we're buying replacements because these guys are bored.
