Sorry, I'm confused. If your gold companion was upgraded 2/4 without emails, does that mean that you kept that person on your PNR? I'm trying to master this whole -- "separate the PNR so that you can get upgraded at your window and then arrive at the airport early to get your companion on the wait list" thing. Any pointers?

sorry, dthernandez. same itineraries but separate PNRs. if you are traveling with someone in the same PNR, you get the lowest level of the two of you. then, when you check in for the flight, you get the highest level.

This can and does happen when people miss their connections after checking in at another city. TPA and any other city with a lot of commuter (Gulfstream) flights would have this happen with some regularity esp. if they're connecting from the carib. FAs are specifically told NOT to do "onboard" upgrades for all the obvious reasons. I have had them refuse an empty FC seat to one of my co-workers (traveling on a FC pass)in the same "checked in full" type of situation.</font>
Or, alternatively, they just flat out lied to you. That is if you are a believer in the principles of Occam's Razor

I understand how a checked in full flight can have an empty seat if the occupant is a connection, My question is why did they ignore the upgrade list when they dis the passenger count and noticed an empty seat.

If positive match is in place they need to account for the missing passenger and once they did they could have offered up the seat to the top dog on the list

If any one has seen FA's move prople after the flight I guarantee it's a similar situation, only the recipients are non-revs

4/4 on upgrades this past weekend.

several "battlefield" (or whatever they are called) upgrades for others.

on every flight, the redcoat working the flight counted the empty first class seats and brought people up making it 100% in F.

1) doesn't the computer tell the gate agents how many F seats are left? why do they always have to count manually?

2) it stinks to be in the last row of F (assigned by the computer), several people are upgraded at the last second, no good meals left for the last row. but, whatever. i bring on my own snacks so that i am not dying at the end of the flight.
