Upgrading with miles

Hi

Just looking at buying tickets from London to Steamboat (via Houston) for my ski holiday nexst February. I have a few questions (to try and avoid me getting things wrong) before I attempt to use miles to upgrade.

1. I have to get a H, K or Y class economy to upgrade with miles don't I.
2. If I am travelling from London to Steamboat (via Houston), does my 20,000 miles (each way) upgrade the whole trip or just the international segment (London to Houston)?
3. I assume that I waitlist for upgrade at the time of booking, the miles will be debited at the time of booking, but the upgrades will not clear until I am within the "upgrade" window (30 days prior to flight), if at all. If the upgrades do not clear, the miles will be redeposited in my account
4. Is there any upgrade fee which I need to pay in addition to the H.K or Y fare and the miles?
5. Anything else I need to know about using miles to upgrade?

Does anyone know what the probability of these upgrades clearing is for February/March on this route?

Thanks,
Boo

1 Yes

2 Yes (whole RT, but not if a tiny-tube RJ)

3 Yes/Yes/yes

4 No

5 No

About 55%, 90% of the time.

I think that's incorrect.

1./4. You can buy B or V class, and pay $300 extra each way to upgrade (only if you clear the waitlist) or you can buy Q or T (cheaper) and pay $400 extra each way to upgrade.

Typically, i think buying the H/K ticket ends up being a little cheaper than the B/V/Q/T + Fee, the difference is, you only have to pay that extra fee if you clear. No refund/rebate on the H/K fare if you get stuck in coach.

Another point - be sure that the whole ITTN will be upgraded. Only if it is available will it be upgraded, otherwise you will be wait listed. The agent may not tell you anything about the domestic leg.

I had a bad experience where the agent didn't tell me that the IAH-SEA leg of a LIM-IAH-SEA upgrade was unavailable - Imagine my surprise checking in and finding out that 2/5th of my paid upgrade was unavailable.

BTW still awaiting for a response from OnePass Customer Care - been waiting for weeks!
