nesting trips to earn plat?
I'm considering the plat challenge, fly 3 r/t and earn plat. But I only have need/time for 2 R/T this year!
One trip would be SFO-DTT, which requires a stop in IAH anyway. Since I don't have so much time, I'm considering booking this as two nested trips:
SFO-IAH and IAH-SFO
and inside this:
IAH-DTT DTT-IAH
I believe we've discussed this on here before, and nesting is OK per the rules. However, I wonder if there are any other risks, such as a late flight affecting my other trip (and since the flights aren't on the same itinerary, perhaps they won't accomodate this as well as they usually would)
Any thoughts?

I've been looking at a similar scenario. Mrs. Duxfan is going to need so help to make silver this year, may have to do it on segments. There are some really cheap fares in a market from CLE. Could I do this?
First Saturday:
Ticket one: CLE-DTW-XXX on a CO ticket on CO flight number operated by NW.
Return same day on ticket 2: NW ticket xxx-DTW-CLE on NW flights on NW metal.
Second Saturday:
Use return half of ticket 2: NW ticket CLE-DTW-XXX NW flights, NW metal.
Use return half of ticket 1: XXX-DTW-CLE CO ticket, CO flight number, NW metal
8 segments for around $200. She'd use all parts of the tickets, I can't see that I'm courting disaster, but still...

My plan was that I have 1 more R/T to plan and I have to go to MSY; but that is not on my list...howeverm Houston is
So, I figured I book one ticket EWR-IAH R/T and a second ticket IAH-MSY. Since I have other friends going to MSY non-stop, I give them my luggage and don't have to worry about checking in my bags.
However, would I have to have a long layover? or would this be a no biggie in CO's eyes.
Also, can I check into both flights in EWR even though one ticket is orginating in IAH?
And this brings up another good question... If you had two seperate tickets, like my situation could they check the bags through to MSY? or since they are seperate itin's the luggage system won't process it?
