AMSTERDAM, June 3 (Reuters) - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) said on Monday that it and Continental Airlines have extended the duration of their codesharing agreement to the end of May, 2003, and will extend the scope of the deal from June 15.
The airlines said in a statement that their codesharing agreement is being expanded to include selected flights to Europe, the Middle East and Africa which are operated by KLM and its units from Amsterdam and which connect with Continental's recently launched non-stop flights from Houston to Amsterdam.
KLM and Continental also said in a statement that they are continuing to discuss the possibility of longer-term cooperation with partner Northwest Airlines (NWAC).
They said the talks could lead to a joint venture on trans-Atlantic operations similar in structure to the current joint venture between KLM and Northwest which offers passengers more than 130,000 city-pair connections worldwide.
KLM and Continental currently codeshare on flights which connect with each other's non-stop services between Amsterdam and New York, as well as on selected flights to U.S. destinations operated by Continental beyond its Houston hub.
Airlines have increasingly formed partnerships after the September 11 attacks in the U.S. compounded by last year's economic downturn, hit demand, pressured margins and forced capacity cuts to help contain costs.
KLM, which posted a net loss of 156 million euros for its business year to end-March, has said it will continue to be prudent in adding back capacity.
