Cigarman Going Balistic

If you miss Cigarman's commentary on the state of air travel in 2002, go check out his latest post in the Delta Forum!
Although I too would have been a little upset over the way DL handled the situation.

NJDavid... I thought we had a truce?

And I would like to point out that HP is very nicely going to follow me to Delta... I miss those direct flights to BUR. So I guess the HP thing can be my fault too.

I was unable to find a Delta thread where Cigarman goes "balistic." Could you provide a link?

I think he means this thread:

By c-man standards, this rant is pretty benign.

I read as much of that post as I could stand. Seems to me that there are Delta flyers who have no problem accepting less than stellar service from their airline. And yes, believe it or not, this is what I expect from any vendor.

Maybe it's because I'm in marketing, but I think to treat your best clients in the manner in which Cigarman was treated is absurd. In what other industry can you get away with that?

In Cigarman's case, he seems to have been treated as if he were a whiny child instead of as a valued passenger who was subject to bad business practices of the airline---and yes overbooking I view as a bad business practice. How long are you going to give them your business, Cigarman? Have they really earned it?

I actually had CO take away my first class seat once. It was a mileage upgrade EWR-LAX (on a 767), using paper certificates.
I left the certs at home, called CO on the way to the airport (from work) to see if they would be able to deduct the miles directly from my account at the airport instead. Agent said no, but she could do it now. I said never mind, I'll swing by my home to pick up the certs.

Get to the airport, and lo and behold! no FC seat for me. I was told that I was downgraded because I didn't have the certificate. I proceeded to wave it in front of the check-in counter agent's face and asked him to repeat what he just said. (I'm exaggerating).

Anyway, I begged and pleaded nicely with the gate agent, she put me at the top of the waitlist, there was one no-show, and I got my seat. But that was a pure stroke of luck.
If I had to sit in the back, you can be sure there would have been hell to pay...
